Comments (10)At least here Benjamin is not an unruly rose bush. Five by five feet and fairly nicely branched. Sort of straight stalks with one foot laterals coming from them. The scent is very odd, sweet and with a candy hint thrown in. The color in my garden is red but with a pinkish cast to it making a cherry glow....See MoreSuggest colours / roses to match Benjamin Britten
Comments (8)I bought BB at a garden center by accident. The bushes weren't in bloom and somehow I I got it confused with Christopher Marlow. So now I have three of them. I do like it, very healthy. Mine has never shown much of the orangey tone that the catalogue photo has. It's hard to describe the color: a warm dark pink, not quite hot pink. There's a certain iridescence. It's not quite so tough to coordinate as you'd imagine. There's a design drawing in DAs catalogue that places it between Molineux on one side and Mayflower & Falstaff on the other. Plenty of contrast there. In my garden, BB has Mary Magdalene & Brother Cadfael on one side, and Munstead Wood & The Alexandra Rose on the other....See MoreCl Benjamin Britten vs Cl Gertrude Jekyll
Comments (3)I have Benjamin Britten, but even though left to itself to get 10-12 ft tall, I would call it a stretch to consider it a climber. It can be a tall shrub. For covering a 10 ft pergola, it would probably be too short if you are in the cool, coastal PNW. It blooms quite reliably all summer here even though the flowers are on the small side and fade rather badly from a bright vermilion to a watermelon pink. You might have a look at Polka, Night Light, Cl Sombreuil, Soaring Spirits, Fourth of July, Altissimo, Sally Holmes, or Westerland as alternatives. The spring rose shows are coming up in a few months. Perhaps you could visit one or more to have a look at some of the climber entries to see if any of them catch your eye....See MoreBenjamin Britten - does it fade terribly?
Comments (4)Well, Heidi, I find it fades to a purple shade, after starting out a mixture of red with hints of orange and overlaid with some strange grey bits. It's the grey I find a touch disconcerting. Most Austin's fade, that's supposedly part of their charm and what they prefer as the breeders, so they say... In favour of this rose, I should add that it's a continuous bloomer in distinct flushes, I get 4 or 5 in a season, never sprayed, and no issues with disease.. I grow mine in a large pot. I find the fuller bloom Austin's last quite well in a vase, I get 7 or 8 days from some of them... not sure about this one, I don't think I've ever cut any......See Morelibrarian_gardner_8b_pnw
