One-Week Review of Jenn Air Pro Range (and Dishwasher)
Comments (17)Nice bit of "Jenn-air" history, hvtech42! My only disagreement with it would be to "Lump all the JA products together" in the "History Lesson". I have no experience with the JA cooking products, (cooktops, ranges, ovens~~~etc). But I do have a lot of experience with a Jenn-air Fridge and in fact, I've done a lof of research on them. Back in 2006, I was looking for a 48" built in fridge. Back then, I only had 3 choices, (or at least that's all I could find in stores and on the net). One was GE, since I had a GE S X S full sized fridge I was going to replace, (I could not get icemaker parts even during it's one year warranty)!!, & It leaked and rusted out the sides of the fridge~~sooooo~~~~GE was out of the running, (back in 2006). The other choices were SZ and Jenn-air. Apparently SZ was having evaporator problems back in 2006, (some say it was a copper problem, others say it was caused by copper tubing and aluminum fins on the tubing)~~~~anyway~~~SZ was rated "Dead Last" in reliability by Consumer Reports~~~~yeah I know, but I took time to research the evaporator problem and found out enough about it to scare me off! Jenn-Air "S X S as well has built ins" have been rated the #1 fridge for reliability by readers of Consumer Reports since 2006, and today I believe it is "Tied" with another manufacturer for the #1 position, SZ is about 4 points below, (So not significant, at least to me). The Jenn-Air of 2006 was "Way Ahead of it's Thyme". It offered conveniences and attributes that even most fridges today don't offer. It was one of the first to use the variable speed compressor, very quiet and efficient and great temp control. It has digital readouts and settings for 3 different areas of the fridge, (Meat Keeper, Chrisper and main compartment). It has a 4th digital readout and control for the freezer. It has crank up and down shelves---luv those, so handy when encountering a tall bottle or whatever! The fridge also has built in Diagnostics The disgnostics will check the speed of every fan in the fridge, it will check compressor speed, check the flap operation between the fridge and freezer, all in all about 31 diagnostic test~~~~~sooooo~~~~if I ever have a problem with the fridge, I should be able to pretty well "Nail down" which part is causing the problem and make sure the appliance repair company has it, BEFORE they come out and have a "Look SEE" as they do with most fridge repairs. So, great history lesson, but I think you have to (at the very least) split the JA Fridge from the JA cooking appliances to really see "The Whole Picture"! Unfortunately, today, 2014, it looks like Whirlpool may have removed a lot of the things I really like about my JA Fridge, The crank up/down shelves, The 3 different temp settings for different areas of the fridge, and I would bet money they removed the "Diagnostics" Too!! Comments (26)The new Hobarts were not as well reviewed in that article. While they said it worked well with anything they threw at it, they added -- "Narrow bowl mouth (the narrowest) made it awkward to add ingredients, and turning off power to change speeds was a painÂbut not as much as transporting the 55-pound beast." And then there is the price tag. I think availability and actual pricing may be a deciding factor as well as features. I'd never seen a Cuisinart mixer before when I got mine. I know I can get service and parts on a KA, but don't on the Cuisinart -- which makes that warranty more important, but what will it mean if you have to put it into play? I still don't know where I could actually go and see the Cuisinart mixer -- maybe Williams Sonoma? Also, the KA pro model is listed at $399 -- more than the Cuisinart, but mine was under $250 at actual purchase. And I had a choice of colors. Bottom line, I don't think you're likely to go wrong with either of them -- and probably not any of the top models. Best bet is to see if one feels more comfortable to you or a color pulls at your heartstrings. Have fun deciding. :-)...See MoreOne year after construction review....
Comments (6)I wish more people would do this. I love looking at the "My bathroom is done!" posts as much as everyone else, but for me how stuff holds up over time is pretty important. If it doesn't work for whatever reason, I'm not going to use it. I did learn a little after we finished our kitchen. I chose a F&P dish drawer for my dishwasher. Absolutely loved it. Wasn't until I started having problems a few years later that I found out there were 2 people in the whole city that worked on them and one of them was a nutcase. Metro area with over a million in the city- not exactly the middle of nowhere. Hmmm, wonder if anyone wants a "My kitchen is 13 years old!" post. Sorry you're having problems, but thanks again for taking the time to post. Lisa...See MorePlease review our preliminary plan for one level home
Comments (12)Thanks to all who weighed in!! Lots to think about. We did speak to 2 local architects. Sadly, both were way out of our price range for a similar house & their lead time was quite lengthy. We’d love it to be our forever home, but it might not be and adding in their costs (both similar) we’d be hard pressed to recover our initial investment. Snaggy – we’ll have a small closet in the foyer and one in the back coming in from the garage, if I can figure out where to put it. tatts – there will be no bath in the center of the house, unless you mean the guest bath on the hall. Also, the kitchen windows – probably 6-8’ wide - face south. Summit studio – I agree the long, shallow porches on the plan are artificial looking, we plan to shorten the front one & center on the entrance, making it deep enough to sit comfortably. We sit on our current porch a lot. We have mountain views to the south and often have coffee and lunch there. The rear will be more of a gathering space, I hope. We'll cover only a part of it and have a patio for grilling, etc. We get our strongest winds from the W and hope the garage will shield us a little. The rear looks out to the meadow beyond and will have my gardens just off of it....See Moremtnrdredux_gw
