Roof Leak or Condensation?
Comments (14)where the water stains show on the ceiling aren't always where the roof leaks. for instance if the ridge vent leaks the stain is often lower down on the ceiling as water drains down. I've seen chimney flashing leak & the water stain on the ceiling was several feet lower than where chimney was located. I'm not in a climate where we have to worry about snow, but a thermal scan of the roof would show moisture intrusion into the attic. rather than being sold a bandaid patch, I'd invest in thermal scan (Infra red camera) of roof before settling for something that isn't actually fixing the issue. I'd second inspecting all venting, flashing & vent caps. water dripping from nails can also come from conditioned space air leakage into attic, as well as unvented bath fans. if at all possible hold off until spring to determine what needs to be done. they wouldn't be replacing roof in the snow anyway would they?? its a tough spot to be in...we often have hurricane damage that requires more than insurance pays for. the insurance company just wants to write you a check & move on. they are not worried about addressing the issues as they are about just settling. get opinions/estimates from several roofers. but only roofers who have been in business IN YOUR AREA for several years. La. is still addressing lawsuits from roofers from other states who came here to rip off homeowners. most of these companies take your money do a crap job & then are unavailable when issues re-occur. don't hire fly by night out of state roofers! best of luck....See MoreSolar tube leaking? Condensation?
Comments (2)Condensation would only occur on the warm humid side of a cold object. Perhaps snow on the roof provided insulation and when it melts the cold outside air makes the exterior cover cold enough to create condensation in the tube below. That would enquire sun melting snow on a very cold day. I would assume a flashing or cover crack Unless there evidence of Many years of water damage. This might be good time to replace the cover....See MoreRoof leak or condensation?
Comments (9)Ava- The first thing to make sure of is that it's a condensation leak and not some other type of leak, which can be done by seeing if you can observe where the drip is coming from. If it is a condensation leak, I would seal the joints with a wrap or two of "foil tape," which is different from duct tape. Foil tape is shiny and has a really strong adhesive. Look for it at any big box store. I use Nashua Foil Tape, which is less than $10 for a big roll. After sealing the joints, you could wrap the ductwork with a fiberglass batt like the kind you put in walls for insulation and hold it in place with wire or tape, or use something called fiberglass wrap-on insulation, which comes in a long, thin roll....See MoreMu HVAC is leaking condensation inside.
