Raised ranch updates

We bought our raised ranch 4 years ago but are considering painting at least the entry door. I don’t like the black door/black shutters. The brick has a weird squiggle design in each brick. What else can we do to update?

What is your decor style? Unless it's traditional, you should get a new front door and remove the pediment over the door. Remove the shutters. The siding looks greenish. If you're not changing the siding the front door could be dark green. I don't think there is anything wrong with the front door being black, it's more the style of it that isn't quite right. The landscaping covers up the brick pretty well, so I don't think it's a problem.

I don't have any pictures saved of split foyer raised ranches, but here is one that is somewhat similar which was modernized. You don't have to go that modern if that doesn't suit you either.

Hey everyone, here are some pics of my stairs (please excuse the mess in the first pic, it was Christmas morning a few years ago, I was taking my daughter to see all of her presents and my parent's were up visiting) the second photo is of the wall next to the stairs in my living and the 3rd one is my son standing in front of the stairs last Halloween. The other set of stairs are in the kitchen. I would love to be able to be able to cut into the wall between the stairs and open it up a bit with a nice banister and some railings because we are also going to convert our garage into another room as well so I would really like everything to flow together better, but I know that is a lot easier said than done. I would also like to do something on the side of the stairs with the closet next to it. Any ideas on a way I can update them? I can post some pics of both sets of the stairs later without anything if front of them but at the moment there are a lot of big toys in my living room.

@BethYes, I saw some of these before and afters when researching and they give me hope! I will try to mockup wood paneling over the garage like you suggested. I love the garage door style, it is actually what we have in mind but could not reproduce in the mockup tool I am using. Also, your fence suggestions have given me some inspiration ... perhaps I could try to paint or stain the concrete wall black to tie in with the black timber retainers suggested by @hallettco and then try to use some pattern of wood panels over the concrete wall instead of a full wall of wood. I will play around with that idea and see how it looks.

Our neighbors have a large house with similar siding amd when they moved in they painted the siding white and the trim a soft black, kind of like what housaon posted. It took a few days to get used to since it is a very large house but it looks great now, very fresh and current and certainly less expensive than replacing perfectly good siding. they also refreshed all the exterior light fixtures to modern black fixtures which added to the overall modern effect. i think a simialr treatment would work well on your house. And I agree the shutters should go.

I would do more of a real porch/portico on the front, but definitely no stone around the base. If you decide to build a porch you could do the steps in stone or brick. Before you build a front porch you need to decide whether you want to style the house modern or traditional. The shutters are leaning traditional. I agree with removing the shutters no matter what direction you go in. Shutters are rarely a good idea when they aren't sized correctly for the windows they're on. Your house can be almost any color, so just go to the paint store and see what appeals. As with any painting project, sampling is very important. Daylight has a way of simultaneously washing colors out and also emphasizing any undertones in a color. So sample on all sides of your house and look at the color at different times of day from close up and far away. If budget permits, reside the whole house in prepainted cement board such as Hardie board. It lasts a long time and holds color better than wood.

Depending on your budget you could add a porch or portico and update the entrance.

Definitely paint the shutters.

I'd do a deep forest green or dark sage green for the shutters. I'd paint the trim around the door a warm cream. The white is pretty blinding.

Completely agree with removing the shutters. The windows aren’t the right size/style for them. If possible, consider a new front door with glass that mimics the panes in your first floor windows.

Totally different style house but one example of how the glass in the front door and windows compliment each other.

I would start by removing the pediment over the front door. You may not need to do anything else.

I also think removing the pediment over the front door and removing all the shutters will be a nice change. I would paint the entry door and sidelights the same color to really open up the entryway, perhaps a shade of deep grey/green. If budget allows, update the sconce lights to something a little more prominent.

Remove shutters. Remove grilles in windows if they are not fixed. Remove pediment. Change door.
