Oscar Night
Comments (31)Whoo-hoo-hoo! Scorcese and The Departed won!!!!! I was thrilled and I was also very pleased that Alan Arkin took the Best Supporting Actor prize for Little Miss Sunshine. Both Mirren and Whittaker made really gracious speeches about their wins, which was a pleasant change from thanking names on a list. Leo DiCaprio has long since grown out of his boyishness and his roles have gotten better and more demanding. While he didn't win last night (I thought he was nominated for the wrong movie, anyway, and thought his role in The Departed was Oscar-worthy), it will happen for him some day. And then maybe not, of course. There was Peter O'Toole in the audience, looking very longing to be recognized and for the eighth time did not get the prize. Ellen was a delight--warm, witty without guffaws, engaging the audience in ways that delighted them and gave folks like me a chance to get a quick look at "stars" when they were a little off guard and weren't in a "role." And those dancers who looked like Circe de Soleil acrobats and mimed icons of the best pic nominees were mighty clever. When they turned themselves into a VW bus and later a gun, I was laughing out loud. The show had a couple of draggy spots but then it always does, and I just waited past them for the stuff I wanted to see. Overall, set design was simpler than usual and thus more appealing. Meryl Streep fixed her bra strap (again!) and obviously needs to be better fitted in her undergarments. But she was a total charm when Ann Hathaway and Emily I'm-drawing-a-blank were handing out an award; Streep was obviously happy for them and put on a Miranda face just to heighten the fun. Jadon Smith might be the handsomest little kid around and his dad, Will, is his best audience. Talk about a proud dad. And how about Al Gore's team winning an Oscar for An Incovenient Truth? While that won't make some of the naysayers on "that other forum" happy, I was sort of wide-eyed when a man who might have been president of the US bounded on to the Oscar stage with the folks who made his film possible. Nice. Now we're into the film void. Netflix just sent me an e-mail pitching me to rejoin. They know what's going on out there. I might just take them up on the offer, at least until the fall when all this hoopla starts all over again....See Morewhen to start seeds
Comments (18)mike!!!! your lights need to be about one inch from those tiny plants.. for vigor ... though i presume you moved them for a pic ... and if you had sterilized your media.. you MIGHT have avoided the algae .. in worse case.. it can kill the babes ... but they will be potted up into 6 oz solo cups at 4 leaf stage.. so sterilize that media ... also.. that is a nice POTTING media you have there.. there is finer ground media.. for SEED starting ... and the way it looks like media is sticking to the sides.. above the water line.. as in it looks like Noah's flood came thru.. is there drainage in the bottom of your tray ... if not.. next spring.. save some cell packs.. to use above the water holding tray.. obviously you have success.. just making notes to go to the next level ... if you wish ... also.. some bottom heat.. might help them grow faster.. my furnace kicks down to 64 at night.. and that is not seed growing temps ... so if you have a heat mat .. and ran it.. at night.. it might make them grow faster ... presuming the furnace brings up the house temp during the day ... all complicated if you are doing this in a cold basement .... the variables: light .. water.. heat/temp ... and operating room cleanliness ... see link ... ken Here is a link that might be useful: sterilizing media in microwave or oven ... in the oven ... i used a dollar store turkey pan covered in alum foil .... with one hole in the foil.. and when it steamed .. it was done ... leave covered for a few days ... unless you want the whole house to smell of damp warm media ... i would like such.. but wifey might not ......See MoreNew Purchase of Sans.
Comments (44)Hello all! I am no longer a member of that other group. It was fun but way too off track most of the time. When I was having other problems with Yaloo I quit. I had sent Hermine a large plant in trade once and never got what was promised in return. I don't think that was intentional and hold no regrets.....she is a very colorful person with a lot of interests in life and I think she is very active in work and many personal interests and spreads herself thin. I do absolutely love Hermine's writing style and sense of humor. She knows her plants and you can learn someting and roll on the floor laughing at the same time when reading something she has written. Dear Norma knows her well....See MoreIf you could buy just one streaker...
Comments (28)Streakers are a lot of fun IMHO. They are interesting but do require some occasional "maintenance". You have to understand them though. A streaker by definition is not stable. Some say some types are more stable than another but it really depends more on the individual eye/plant you are looking at and how much streaking is in the leaves. the more random stripes of variegation that are in the leaves, the more likely it is to produce more similar eyes. E.g. if a leaf is all green with just a strip or two of variegation that is much less likely to produce a variegated/striped eye. You will see this even on parts of plants. If you have a streaker that is producing all green leaves on one quarter of the plant and the rest is well streaked......the streaked portion will produce mostly more streaked eyes (maybe an occasional green, or stable variegated or albino) but the eyes that grow off the green portion will be all green. The caveat on this example is that the greener portions will be stronger (more chlorophyll) so may eventually take over the whole clump if not removed. Confused?? I need some good photos. Now to your original question.....' Fascination' has been around for some time.....is a reasonably fast grower......and a classic breeder that produces viable seeds. Do you have a limited budget.......you may try to trade with other folks on this forum come the growing season. Offer Hostas or other interesting garden plants....See Morelindalana 5b Chicago
