Should I just give up?
Comments (10)hi tulips, i wanted to give you some words of encouragement, because once you get over this hurdle you will be so in love with how hardy this vine is and how much it will give in terms of sheer profusion of flowers. when i buy these small plants from the big box stores, i usually kill 50% or more of them, i think last year alone, 4 or 5 of them didn't make it - or so i think, i won't know for sure until summer or even next year. some of them can stay dormant for a year or more before resprouting. why not wait and see? also, with really small clematis plants, i've heard it is best to keep it potted and nursed for a full year (1 summer's worth of growing + overwintering in your garage for the first winter) before planting it out. be sure to make sure there is ample water and that it gets some relief from the sun when young, esp. if you have it in a pot. hope this helps. since i "discovered" them 3 years ago, i've become totally in love with my clematis vines and have over 15 in my yard. i hope you overcome this hurdle to enjoy yours as well. Here is a link that might be useful: my 3 year old clematis garden...See MoreShould I give up a walk-in pantry for more windows?
Comments (18)I can't see many of the posted diagrams, so just speaking as someone who has a TON of windows in her kitchen.... The glare off the water when there is full sun is blinding. I preface this with the fact that I hate summer and prefer fall/overcast/misty days. The icky granite that someone put in this house reflects and makes some days nearly impossible to work in---never mind the greenhouse-effect in the summer that makes that area so much hotter!!! I would much rather have walls....offers more cabinets, hooks, decorative items to land. If getting light in is an issue but you love the layout you had with less windows, could you consider a sky-light? That would bring in a ton of light and not have to alter any design ideas....See MoreShould I give up on these rhodies?
Comments (12)I agree with northwoodswis4 that PMJ is pretty much the best of the lot that can successfully grown in most of Alberta. I had one at my last location and it did pretty darn good, though it received too much winter sun that damaged the foliage, so it's best to place these where they're be somewhat shaded from winter sun and also not exposed to strong winds, though they really are rather tough plants compared to other varieties. I think I'll track one down this spring, as I have the perfect spot!...See MoreButterscotch Climber - should I give up?
Comments (19)You are to be complemented if you can even get root survival for Butterscotch cl. in zone 6a. I tried that one at least 4 times in my zone 6 pocket in my yard and I never even had the slightest glimmer of pretending to survive. There's very little chance it'll ever even pretend to climb in zone 6a as it's a pretty wimpy plant (grafted or own root), so just plan on it being a smallish shrub if it survives. I'd be counting my blessings if it survived as well as yours did. Remember that climbers take 3-4 years to settle in if they're happy, and they're much less happy if they have to regrow their cane every year from winter kill. I tried every winter protection method I know to encourage more cane survival and it never even slightly worked. Take what you can get but don't expect too much in the cold zones from this plant. Definitely accept that it will never climb is my recommendation. I have firmly resolved that I will NOT look at Beth's gorgeous pictures of this rose any more and I am done trying this rose (and please remind me of this if I get tempted).
