Are undermount sinks really easier to keep clean?
Comments (28)Writersblock has a great point- I didn't understand what "flushmount" meant with the new Blanco microedge until I just looked at installation instructions. The counter is routered down 2mm to inset the sink edge into the counter, so that there is a nice smooth junction with no bump like a topmount, yet it still has the topmount-like advantage of sliding the colanders, etc. on the stainless rather than the counter surface. Only issue: recommended for solid-surface countertops only! Sadly, since I'm thinking of quartz countertops, this cool flushmount option may not be for me after all. Comments (11)Can you explain what you meant by "Because of the width and length of the kitchen, I have opted to do an undermount sink instead of a farmhouse"? Does that mean that you think an apron front sink's size is an issue? You can get an apron front sink with a more farmhouse/traditional feel in several widths if your comment meant that size was a concern. I am thinking specifically of the Kohler Whitehaven sink which is enameled cast iron, and comes in 30", 33", and 36" widths. Furthermore, the Whitehaven apron front sink comes in both the traditional/typical apron sink height, as well as a shallower apron height for a less massive look. The corner drain also is great. I've had stainless steel sinks in past homes, and didn't like the scratches, water spots, and that it never again looked sparkly after about the first week or two. Comments (1)The Elkay sink I wanted came in only 19ga. I asked whether this would be an issue,I think on Plumbing, and I was assured that it was a negligible difference from 18ga. 16ga is slightly thicker, no doubt, but if it helps the budget, take the 18ga. In my case, the difference between the 19ga and a similar 16ga was $200, so budget was a factor for me, too. I've been using my undermount 19ga for over a year, and it still looks new (when I polish it). And I wash my Springer Spaniel in it, so it's getting pretty heavy use....See MoreUndermount sink keeps separating from granite
Comments (59)My contractor secured our stainless double sink under cabinet mount with the HUSH system. That was about five years ago. The sink has separated from the granite countertop and we now have a roughly 3/4 inch gap between the sink and the countertop. I am repairing it tomorrow and I will not be using a HUSH. I intend to try the Never Fall system. Yeah, I paid $30 for it but i won’t have to fix this thing again. I just realized this is a pretty old thread but I am going to post it anyway. Might keep someone from wasting his or her time and money on the HUSH....See MoreHolly Prout
