Help with curb appeal

Previous owners turned garage into great room but this was done wrong and mold destroyed the room so badly it must be torn down and rebuilt. Due to house style (salt box) we are limited but looking for any suggestions on how to add curb appeal. Sketches are front and side views of main 2-story house and the planned 1-story addition. Planned addition footprint is larger than original. Thinking of adding a cupola to addition to give some height /interest. Also considering moving addition entry to front with porch on the addition (we don’t really use front door as main entry as side is much closer in proximity to driveway where everyone parks). I think I’m struggling mostly with the overall look and curb appeal and would appreciate constructive feedback. Thanks!

Photos of the main house as well as a floor plan would help. There are a million ways to detail this based on the architecture of the main house which is to vague in the elevation

If you google New England farm houses, you will see that many had one story extensions, often with full length porches and family entry doors. I would look to their historical example for inspiration. Are you adding a garage? Will this connect with the garage? Consider something like this…

What is the budget ? What are you ( or he) open to change? For starters, it looks like decluttering & re-landscaping is needed. Is the first pic how it looks now? Better pictures from other angles would help.

Would be helpful to see a photo from further away. I see no walkway leading to the porch. Consider removing the 2 shrubs at entryway and landscape a path off the entryway out about 15 feet leading to a circular large planting bed which might include a tree, bench sitting spot, and flowers. The light above entry seems wrong for placement so when budget allows consider getting new lights located each side of entryway.

I think staining or painting the red brick only looks like an improvement based on what people saw before. That is to say, if you came upon this house for the first time after all the suggestions for staining or painting had been done, you'd be thinking: How can I change the look of this house? The big black portico overhang is the thing I would most want to change, along with the black roof trim. The house has a design (not saying it is one I like) and I think uncovering the design would be a step in the right direction, rather than constantly applying coats of darker paint. Wondering if any other houses in the neighborhood are like this? Are there photos of the house when it was built? Would love to know what is behind the lattices.

Yeah, that yellow is a misfit with your home. And I also agree with changing the color of the shakes in the gable, or maybe even removing the shakes to put siding there. (It is typically advised to have no more than 2 different types of surface on a home, and those shingles make 3 for you. That we can see, anyway.) The brick looks good. I’d pick a soft cream color for the siding but make sure it isn’t yellowish.

thank you for the advice. we have a detached two car garage. It’s a little far from the house to connect.
