Counter top help for this cookie cutter kitchen..(pics)
Comments (15)Yea, the counters aren't in bad shape at all. Except there's some water damage around that wood trim. Which is also the part I hate the most. That trim! And with wanting to paint the cabs white, I can't leave that and I don't like the look of that part painted, either. You know how you walk in the room, and something just stands out and as eye sore, making you not like the entire room. That's what these counters do for me. I really wouldn't mind the kitchen at all, if it weren't for those. Heck..I'd probably not even paint the cabs, (a whole other fear there). But, the green with the red paint kills me. If we don't get them done in the next six months, we're painting the kitchen again. Just to get rid of the red and green. It's funny, one of the reasons we bought this house a yr ago over some of the others, was because of the counters. I was so sick of seeing the same granite everywhere, this was a nice change. I think if I could go to a granite yard, pick out a beautiful slab I'd consider doing granite. But, I'm really just tired of seeing it in every single house I go to. High end homes, to middle of the road ones like mine. I have no choice but to do something cheaper, from a box store. And I just can't see doing the thin, little granite slabs all the builders and flippers do around here....See MoreBest countertop edge to look 'thick', opinions please!!
Comments (15)aedevm , about your first post: squared edge and eased edge are the same thing, the same concept, expressed by two different people with different levels of expertise. Basically the same thing, not worth analyzing. The salesperson's idea of 1/2 bullnose is similar because it is not finicky and fine detailed. Something brutish and not curlicued. Coarse not fine. Large not small. It costs less to miter 2cm and the visual effect is the same result. You don't need to purchase 3cm. -- I got 2cm and made it look thinner. I had them remove the lower 1 cm by reverse bevel (and polish), and on the top half I had them do a 3/4 bullnose. This thin counter still looks big and beautiful. With the receding slant on the underside of the counter, our fingers can reach the drawer fronts more easily. The pulls are hidden under the big counter overlap (the pulls are on the top edge of the drawer fronts). All our drawers were installed at a higher level than they would have been, if we had built a thicker counter. More space. And everything is higher and thus easier to reach. Perhaps at some point in the not so distant future the artificially thicker counters will look like someone had a mental model in their mind that they couldn't get rid of no matter how much it interfered with ergonomics and function, and it will be perceived as something not to repeat in new kitchens. Comments (22)kelleg69, I really like that quartz! I just looked it up and of course the nearest distributor is 3 hours away in Dallas (same as the Quartzmasters). I guess I'm going to just have to make another trip. I don't know if the Chinese produced quartz uses the Breton technology everyone seems to talk about on this website. So I don't know what happens if they don't. Here is the link to the pendants, I ordered them a few weeks ago when they were 30% off and free shipping! http://www.horchow.com/Regina-Andrew-Design-Camden-Five-Light-Lantern-Pendants/cprod105150007_cat23930743__/p.prod?icid=&searchType=EndecaDrivenCat&rte=%252Fcategory.jsp%253FitemId%253Dcat23930743%2526pageSize%253D120%2526No%253D0%2526refinements%253D&eItemId=cprod105150007&cmCat=product...See MoreAny ideas on floor tile for farmhouse kitchen/ counter tops?
Comments (7)I agree with LWO--cooktop on the back wall. Also agree about time spent on each kitchen task. (The rest of his post seems a little hyperbolic.) You can then center the sink on the island, and prep to the left, across from the cooktop. The work triangle is contained in an area the size of a normal kitchen ;), and since the sink, DW, and trash pull-out are centered on the island, you have the option to reduce the widths of the drawers on each end, if finding a counter slab that wide proves difficult. I moved the ovens out of the corner (see pic at bottom for possible corner storage options), and drew the cabinets on the back wall deeper than standard, since you have such a wide work aisle. That will also provide more counter space, and if you're using a custom cabinet builder, you can have deeper drawers, for extra storage space. I'd suggest making the bar sink at least 18" wide, so it doubles as a prep sink when you have helpers in the kitchen. I reduced the size of the sink in the butler's pantry, to 18", and added a full-height ROTS pantry unit in there. You could also have a pull-out pantry to the right of the ovens, depending on which corner storage option is chosen. I made the counter deeper in the pantry and omitted the jog to recess the fridge. Cabinet widths are approximate and need to be verified. GW discussions--deeper counters GW discussions--deeper drawers...See MoreHU-283081375
