Opening to between rooms got smaller?

Hi,

I am watching my renovation, and I am not entirely sure what is going on with it. The drywall just went up, and it looks like they somehow made the opening between the dining room and the living room smaller. Could that happen without being agreed upon? What do you think?

That would take reframing the opening.

Likely you got used to the open feeling of no sheetrock.

Here’s a picture from before the house was gutted. Even though you can’t see the entire opening, perhaps one could see that it was bigger before? Unfortunately, I didn’t measure before, so I cannot be sure. It just looks wrong. 😑

The kitchen, which is below the area that is now a one-story, is intact save for the pantry which we had to clear out for them to remove an abandoned chimney and put in a support post. The two other rooms, also in the now one-story area, the bathroom and a bedroom (which we don't use as a bedroom) are also intact. The living room, which is under the existing roof, well, we SHOULD have moved everything out of there. We didn't realize how much they would need to plastic everything off in there so all the furniture (which I covered with sheets) is piled up. We do need to get it out of there at some point, but we were waiting for an enclosed work trailer to become available so we could stick all the furniture in there and not have to rent a POD or something similar. Once they get the new area roughed in and shingled, they will remove the ceiling in the living room to shore up the rafters. The roof was sagging in that part of the house because the structure was underbuilt. I didn't really want to deal with the mess of that but we figured as long as we're doing this much, this is the time to just make it right.

We've thought about a shelf with two separate appliances because we'd definitely be happier being able to choose appliance separately. Having taken the face plate off the front of the current unit so that we could look inside the opening, we now know that in addition to building a shelf, we'd need to put a liner piece of wood over one side of the cavity because what is there is not finish quality material, and we'd need another piece of liner in order to bring the back side forward because now it is too deep for a simple shelf for a microwave to sit on. Is this terribly difficult to do? Taylor's cabinets, can you please explain the filler and overlay filler to me? I do know what you mean about the stain being difficult to match. We just visited a kitchen showroom, and I saw several cabinets where they had to slightly alter the size to insert the new display oven, and despite the fact that the cabinetmaker had done a good job, I could still see the patch. Need a smaller tree for between 2 Sugar Maples

After the maples develop enough the smaller-growing tree is going to look squeezed. And I certainly wouldn't plant anything choice and expensive where it was expected that companion trees were going to overwhelm and spoil it later. Probably better to plant shrubs that will not try to grow up into the realm of the maples, read visually therefore as a third leg. And multiple specimens, of multiple kinds so it isn't just the one thing looking as though being hustled by two thugs: "Come with us, buddy!" Another thing to consider is adding more sugar maples later, to produce a grove effect with different age classes, as in a wild stand. This would look less stiff than having just two of them by themselves, spaced well apart. Since in grove planting the grove of multiple examples of one kind of tree is the feature - and not the individual trees - the spacing is closer.

Who has long term care insurance? We do. We got the policies in our late 50’s when we had no medical issues. The monthly premiums are not a burden, at all. It gives us peace of mind. We are a family of three and neither my husband nor I want our daughter to have to care for us. We bought the inflation protected, stay in your own home incentives which didn’t add much more to the premium. Now that we are talking about finished basements, ours is such that a caretaker could live there. With its own entrance, it would be a very comfortable apartment for a live-in. However, bottom line:, “Man proposes; God disposes”. “Best laid plans”…. A few of us were gabbing the other night at bookclub, (THE STORY OF ARTHUR TRULUV by Elizabeth Berg…if you haven’t read it, this is the perfect time of year to do so ) about our generation aging. We all agreed we feel younger than we are, if not physically than, at least, mentally. I remember my great grandmother wearing only black because she was a widow. I’m 74 and in my head I feel 50ish. Boy, is it a shock to look in the mirror…who is that old lady? LOL.

It does appear slightly smaller to me, when I look at your pictures. I would want the opening to be at least 4 ft wide, and now is the time to correct it, if you want it to be a bigger opening.

Thank-you for saying so. I’ve walked through that casing my entire life and right away when I stepped through into the living room, it seemed tighter than it used to be. When you’re in there, the room is darker too. I had agreed to leaving the opening the way it was, but had not agreed to downsize. I will talk to the contractor about it. Let’s hope he doesn’t throw a fit. 👍

He may bill you for a change order, but, remember its your house, and if you want a larger opening, now, is the time to do so. You are the boss.

The header and framing in the photo look like old wood. Putting up drywall always makes rooms close in after the open framing stage

You remodeler has no incentive to make the opening smaller in width; doing so would require additional framing and drywall.
