Some flowers from Huntington Library
Comments (5)Thanks ya'll. I live in Southern California, so Huntington isn't too far from me. The Camellias looked great (really gorgeous actually), but that was before we had all that rain and wind,... so I'm not sure what they look like now!...See MoreAre The Huntington Gardens A Great Place To Visit In August?
Comments (10)Juliet, the Huntington has fewer Old Roses than it used to, having now more emphasis on Austin roses. I think even most of the older moderns have gone, now. And you DON'T want to see the Teas. The Cactus garden and the new Conservatory will probably be very nice, and the new Chinese garden is supposed to be spectacular. The Galleries, of course, are wonderful. I practically grew up in them, thanks to my grandmother, and I could still spend a lot of time there. (And they're air-conditioned, too!) For Old Roses in the area, I would suggest instead the Descanso Gardens International Rosarium. It's beautifully laid out and maintained. August is not a great season for Southern California rose gardens, but if anything is in bloom, it will be there. Jeri...See MoreHuntington Library Plant Sale
Comments (4)The spring sale is the BIG ONE. Every year there is a theme. I worked it a couple years ago and the theme was dwarf plants, but there were alot of plants that were not dwarf as well. The best way to get access to the goodies is to volunteer. After the sale the volunteers get to buy the leftovers at a significant percentage off too. The lady in charge is Shirley (can't think of her last name but everybody knows her, she's been doing the sale for at least 20 years) and she spends most of the year sourcing the plants for the sale. You will find cultivars there that are pretty much very hard to find if not unavailable....See MoreHuntington Library Rose Garden photos
Comments (10)Just in case there should have been any misunderstanding re my previous comment, my general distaste for modern roses in mass plantings such as those shown in the linked post, is in no way a criticism of Hoov's blog - or her own garden - which, from the little I've seen of them, are both delightful and full of interest and beauty! I would hate for anything negative about them to have been inferred from my comments on some of the views shown in this particular post from the Huntingdon Gardens. I'm sorry if that offends anyone, but this IS the Antique Roses forum - a blessed haven for those of us that often can't suppress a shudder at some of the latest garish or murkily coloured, stiff and sickly Hybrid Teas, et al. I well remember those then very fashionable formal rose beds, sticky with poison sprays and powders, massed in great blocks of one colour/variety of HT or floribunda only, in public gardens from my childhood in the 1950s, and had rather thought we'd moved on from that particular mid-20th century aesthetic. I don't know how it connects historically with the period of the house and its neo-classical style; perhaps there was a fashion for this garden style around that time too, although obviously there wouldn't have been beds full of Icebergs!!. (or 'Passionate Kisses!' for that matter...) Comtesse :¬D...See Moreerasmus_gw
